Middle School The middle school at Grove continues to build on the strong academic foundation set forth at the elementary level. Small classes with caring teachers make the ideal learning environment. The Dress and Honor Code are vital parts of the academic environment at Grove. Middle school academic subjects include English, Math, Science, History, Bible and Physical Education. In addition, they have one elective. Students also have the opportunity to participate in literature groups and read many of the classics. Bob Jones, a strong academic and biblically based curriculum is the main curriculum used, along with A Beka and other resources. The curriculum is continually evaluated to assure that Grove offers the best possible curriculum for all its students. Hands on activities bring subjects to life for the students. While studying World History, middle school students made Roman ruins and built a city square out of clay, sand and other materials. They participate in such activities as a Greek Festival, Italian Feast and on Medieval Day, students made their own catapults and had a competition, along with playing medieval games. Chapel and community service continue to be integral parts of the experience at Grove. Chapel offers students the opportunity to worship through music and hear Christian messages from a variety of speakers. It also allows students the opportunity to participate through drama, music and other personal talents to worship the Lord. Community service is important at Grove. Middle school students sold Christmas ornaments last year to raise money and shop for a family in need. They are also responsible for putting new envelopes in the sanctuary each week. They participate in a school-wide food drive and other community service projects. Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities and field trips throughout the school year. Some of these activities include a school Science Fair, National Geography Bee and a school-wide field day. Students have enjoyed such experiences as visiting the Governor's Mansion, participating in the Native American Cultural Program and conducting environmental experiments at Maymont regarding water pollution. Students continue to grow and develop through athletics, art and music. Students are eligible to participate in Grove's athletic program beginning in the fifth grade. Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball are offered at Grove, along with co-ed soccer, girl's volleyball and cheerleading. Beginning in Spring 2006, co-ed softball will be offered. Students are evaluated at the end of the year by the Stanford Achievement Tests. Our students average test score is 25% higher than the national average.
