Elementary

The elementary at Grove Avenue Christian School provides a strong academic foundation in a safe and nurturing environment. The small classes allow children to receive the individualized attention they need in order to be successful in the classroom. The Dress and Honor Code are vital parts of the academic environment at Grove.

Elementary academic subjects include Reading, Phonics/Language, Math, Science/Health, History, Spelling, Bible and Penmanship. All students in the elementary participate in art, music, computer and physical education. Band is offered to students entering the third grade. Keyboard is offered beginning in second grade.

A Beka is the primary curriculum used and is known for developing strong phonics and math skills. It is supplemented with other curricula such as SRA/McGraw-Hill Reading. The curriculum is continually evaluated to assure that Grove offers the best possible resources for all its students.

Chapel is an important part of the week at Grove. Students worship through music and hear Christian messages from a variety of speakers. Chapel offers students an opportunity to participate through drama, music and other personal talents to worship the Lord.

Community service is also an important part of the experience for students at Grove. Students in the elementary participate in such activities as Operation Shoebox, a school-wide food drive, visiting local nursing homes, providing a Christmas program for the Virginia Boys Home, and other community service projects.

Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities and field trips throughout the school year. Some of these activities include a school Science Fair, National Geography Bee, International Day and school-wide field day. Our students have traveled many places on field trips including the Washington Zoo, Monticello, the Space Challenger Center, Williamsburg and Jamestown, hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Moorefield Mines and many others.

Students are eligible to participate in Grove's athletic program beginning in fifth grade. Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball are offered at Grove, along with co-ed soccer, girl's volleyball and cheerleading. Beginning in Spring 2006, co-ed softball will be offered.

Students are evaluated at the end of the year by the Stanford Achievement Tests. Our students average test score is 25% higher than the national average. For more information on where our graduates have attended college, see the “Our Graduates” section on our website.
